PIPER Conference

Yesterday I gave a presentation at the second annual PIPER (People Improving Peer Empowerment Recovery) Conference. It was held at Touro Law School in Central Islip, NY. My presentation on Simple Happiness - Eight Characteristics of Happy People was very well attended and very well received. However it was far from the highlight of the day.

Deb Damone, founder of PIPER and who is recovering from mental illness herself, told her story at the end of the morning session. It was unlike any life's experience I had ever heard. Her's is a story of survival. She has survived traumatic experiences of her youth and has turned a severe mental condition into a story of hope and inspiration for anyone who suffers from mental illness.

Through PIPER, Deb uses her considerable skills and talents to bring hope and practical ideas to those who partake in her program. She encourages her students to become advocates for others who struggle daily with the issues of mental illness. She brings in speakers from far and wide to enhance the learning experience of her students. Deb continues to develop new programs to challenge her students to continually reach higher in their efforts to overcome their sometimes deep seated disabilities.

You never really know what is going on inside a person's head. You never know what struggles a person could be dealing with in their daily life. Yesterday was a lesson in love, compassion and inspiration and determination. Thanks you Deb.

Deb will be appearing at the Book Revue in Huntington at 7:00 pm on April 6, 2010. She will be giving a talk and signing copies of her book, "The Ominous Betrayal: Memoir of a Child of Hope". If you are suffering from any mental illness or know someone who is, you must attend this event and get her book.

Daily Dose of Inspiration

I try to spend some quiet time every morning. Often I will meditate. Often I will read some inspirational material. Today I picked up The Success Principles by Jack Canfield. What a great book it is. It covers so many aspects of success. It's just full of ideas, stories and practical stuff.
This morning I opened up the book to the chapter dealing with fear. The section I turned to was about Dr. John Demartini, a chiropractor who appeared in the movie The Secret. It simply talked about the confidence he had in his abilities and how setting aside his fears allowed him to live a fabulous life - a life we would all love to live. It was a real kick in the pants for me. It inspired me to take action, to make the calls necessary for me to stay on track toward my perfect life. I had a very good day today. I know that in part it was due to my reading that inspirational story this morning.
We all need inspiration. We need to be sure we take our daily dose to make the most of our days. Be sure to take yours tomorrow.

THE FIRST STEP

I was watching "The Secret" dvd this morning. (By the way, you should get it - http://www.thesecret.tv/). They speak about how to use the secret to manifest what you want into your life. They tell you just focus on what you want and feel good about having it. They tell you not to worry about how you're going to get it - that's the job of the universe. Your job is to visualize the end result and feel good about it. However at times you will receive an inspiration dealing with what you desire to manifest. That's your second job. Pay attention to these inspirations and act on them. It may not be totally clear where these inspirations will lead you, but it's up to you to take the first step.

There are several concepts explained in the movie (or book) that give you the courage to take that first step. Martin Luther King talks about how climbing a staircase begins with taking the first step, even though you may not see the top of the stairs. Jack Canfield says that you can drive from California to New York at night without any big deal. All you have to see is the next 200 feet in front of you which is illuminated by your headlights. Keep trusting in what you see right in front of you. Eventually you will arrive at your destination.

The trick is YOU have to take that first step.
